Wheaten bread, aka whole meal soda bread is an Irish bread that is traditionally made with buttermilk. Here is a vegan friendly, dairy free version where I have used oat milk and apple cider vinegar as a substitute for the buttermilk.

This is such a quick and delicious bread. We had this with a barley vegetable soup yesterday, so good! It is also great with cheese or even with sweet toppings like jam.

Ingredients:

  • 500g whole meal flour

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 500mls oat milk

  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Method:

  1. Preheat oven to 220c (424f)

  2. Combine the oat milk and apple cider vinegar and set aside

  3. Combine all the dry ingredients in a bowl

  4. Add the milk mixture to the bowl

  5. Stir to combine

  6. You can either squished it together into a rough ball shape to bake or use a loaf tin. I used a loaf tin.

  7. Bake for around 30 minutes
